The Raji line of lymphoblast-like cells was established by R.J.V. Pulvertaft in 1963 from a Burkitt's lymphoma of the left maxilla of an 11-year-old Black male.

Complete growth medium: RPMI 1640 medium with 2 mM L-glutamine adjusted to contain 1.5 g/L sodium bicarbonate, 4.5 g/L glucose, 10 mM HEPES, and 1.0 mM sodium pyruvate, 90%; fetal bovine serum, 10%

Subculturing:

Protocol: Cultures can be maintained by addition of fresh medium or replacement of medium. Alternatively the cells may be collected by centrifugation. Cultures can then be established by resuspending the cells in fresh medium at 4 X 10(5) viable cells/ml. A maximum of 3 X 10(6) viable cells/ml is obtainable.
Medium renewal: 2 to 3 times per week
